Night on Bull Street

Since its founding in 1979, the Savannah College of Art and Design has played a central role of preserving and rehabilitating many historic buildings in Savannah. SCAD is now the largest and most important employer located in the Historic District of downtown Savannah. In Night on Bull Street, Luba has captured the viability of the Savannah Volunteer Guards Armory, originally built in 1893. This building was the first building purchased by SCAD’s founders—who went on to buy and fully rehabilitate several dozen historic buildings in Savannah over the past 35-years. The Volunteer Guards were organized in 1802 as an infantry and fought in the War of 1812, various Indian Wars, as well as forming a battalion in 1861, where the Corp served with distinction in the defense of Savannah and Charleston in the Civil War. And during the Confederate retreat to Appomattox, the Volunteer Guards served in the rear guard. Of its 85 remaining men, 23 were killed, 35 were wounded; the remainder were ultimately captured by Union forces. The war-time services of the battalion later continued in the Spanish American War and during both World Wars.
